| The Department of Communication Studies is pleased to present, Midi Onodera’s Vidoodles: Intimate Cinemaat the Media Gallery located in the CJ Building on the Loyola campus (CJ 1.419).Onodera’s exhibition features two mediaworks: Tabletop Viewables (2011) is a multi-screen miniature cinema installation, and her 2009 Movie of the Week will be presented on an interactive touchscreen. Since her 2006 project A Movie a Day, Onodera has been making short videos for private viewing online and on handheld mobile devices such as cellphones and iPods. These intimate, spontaneous movies are a form of miniature cinema or what she has termed, “Vidoodles.” Like a doodle, these experimental narrative videos are unselfconscious expressions, casual amusements that evoke quiet moments of contemplation. Tabletop Viewables is the first in a series of new works that challenge ordinary perception and modes of viewing, and encourage the viewer to view the everyday world differently. This exhibition is co-curated by Communication Studies professors Matt Soar and Monika Kin Gagnon.Midi Onodera is an award-winning filmmaker who has made over twenty-five independent short films, a theatrical feature film and an abundance of short videos since the 1980s. Her current project is FPS, a collection of 24 “Vidoodles.” New shorts are posted on the 1st and 15th of each month and posted at www.midionodera.com. An interview is online at https://www.csj.ualberta.ca/imaginations/?p=258 The Media Gallery exhibits the dynamic creative media work produced in Communication Studies as well as hosting innovative exhibitions by local, national and international media artists.
